Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are excited to welcome you and your child to the upcoming Head Start/Early Head Start school year! Please review the important dates and reminders below to help ensure a smooth transition into the classroom for you and your child.

Center Start Dates

• Leslie A. Johnson Head Start Center (LAJ) – August 24th

Phase-In Days

Prior to the official start of school, families will participate in a phase-in process designed to help children become comfortable in their new learning environment. Please plan to have at least one parent or guardian stay with your child on their phase-in day, which will be 2 hours long. This day is also for you to feel good about leaving your child with us on their first full day!

During this time, you will:
• Meet with your child's teacher.
• Review and update emergency contacts, releases, and required forms.
• Discuss your child's needs and interests, so your teacher can individualize their learning activities.
• Become familiar with classroom routines and expectations.

Phase-In Dates: Monday, August 24^th (8:00 am- 10:00 am) and

Tuesday, August 25^th (8:00 am- 10:00 am)

Parent Orientation

Prior to the official start of school, families will participate in their parent orientation, where we will review the Family Handbook. This orientation will review the program’s policies and procedures, services, and expectations related to attendance, health, safety, communication, and child development. Families will leave this knowing how they can fully participate in the Head Start program.

Orientation Dates: August 24^th and August 25^th
Time: 8:00 am
Location: Leslie A Johnson Head Start Center (LAJ)

Important Reminder

During the phase-in period, a parent or guardian must remain with their child for the scheduled visit. Attendance requirements will begin on the center's official start date. Regular school hours will start August 26^th from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Paperwork Submission

Please submit all required paperwork to LAJ by August 20th, so we have a complete record for your child when they begin.

Required documents may include:
• Enrollment forms
• Emergency contact information
• Health, Physical Exam and Immunization records

Orientación para padres

Antes del inicio oficial de clases, las familias participarán en una sesión de orientación para padres, donde revisaremos el Manual para Familias. En esta orientación se analizarán las políticas y procedimientos del programa, los servicios y las expectativas relacionadas con la asistencia, la salud, la seguridad, la comunicación y el desarrollo infantil. Al finalizar, las familias sabrán cómo participar plenamente en el programa Head Start.

Recordatorio importante

Wilmington Interim Management Program Update

Community Development Institute Head Start (CDI HS) officially began providing Interim Management services for Wilmington Head Start on July 1, 2026. Our goal is to ensure minimal disruption of Head Start services for children and families.

Since assuming operations, CDI HS has focused on hiring staff and preparing to welcome children and families while completing key operational, administrative, and regulatory requirements necessary to support a successful transition.

As part of this process, we are finalizing the licensing for the Leslie A. Johnson Head Start Center, located at 2401 Northeast Boulevard, Wilmington, DE 19802. We are working closely with the appropriate Delaware state agencies to complete the remaining licensing requirements and appreciate the collaboration and support of our community partners throughout this process.

CDI HS remains committed to providing safe, nurturing, and high-quality early childhood education, along with the comprehensive services that Head Start families rely on.

We sincerely appreciate the patience, trust, and continued support of our families, staff, community partners, and stakeholders as we complete this important milestone and strengthen our partnership with the Wilmington community.

Actualización del Programa de Gestión Interina de Wilmington

Community Development Institute Head Start (CDI HS) comenzó oficialmente a prestar servicios de gestión provisional para Wilmington Head Start el 1 de julio de 2026. Nuestro objetivo es garantizar que la interrupción de los servicios de Head Start para los niños y las familias sea mínima.

Wilmington Interim Management Startup Update

Community Development Institute Head Start (CDI HS) has been designated by the Office of Head Start (OHS) to provide Interim Management services for Wilmington Head Start, Inc., beginning July 1, 2026, to ensure the continuity of Head Start services for children and families throughout the transition period. Wilmington Head Start, Inc. will conclude operations on June 30, 2026.

The CDI HS Startup Team began transition activities in the community during the week of April 27, 2026. Initial efforts have focused on staff recruitment and hiring, facility licensing readiness, establishing essential vendor services, and securing required insurance and operational support to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption to services.

CDI HS, in partnership with OHS and local leadership, remains committed to maintaining high-quality services and supporting children, families, staff, and community partners throughout the transition process.
